The Vancouver Art Gallery says the construction cost of its planned new home has jumped from an original estimate of $400 million to $600 million, forcing a redesign.
The art gallery says construction costs across the country spiked by up to 60 per cent between 2020 and 2024, leading to the rise in the estimated cost of the project near Cambie and West Georgia streets in downtown Vancouver.
The plans, drawn up by Victoria architects Franc D’Ambrosio and Erica Sangster of DAU Studio, call for a five-storey art gallery to be among the first structures built, along with an adjacent 14-storey residential strata building on Chatham Street and a six-storey rental building, envisioned as artist live-work studios that have communal workshops and other public facilities.

A new exhibit at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria features a pair of free events open to the public during opening weekend.
The summer exhibition, As waters merge, runs June 6 through Oct. 4 at the Moss Street gallery and examines our emotional relationship to the ocean.
The public events being offered include a celebration at the gallery on June 5 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., and a picnic and curator/artist talk June 6 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Exhibition curators Camille Georgeson-Usher and Jazmine Andrew will join exhibiting artists Charles Campbell, Léuli Eshrāghi, Drew Kahu‘āina Broderick, Sancia Miala Shiba Nash, and Violet Johnson at Aylard Farm in East Sooke Regional Park for the picnic and talk. The public is welcome.
