A developer says its con­tractor’s clean­ing pro­cesses will change after people repor­ted see­ing shattered glass fall­ing from what appears to be the ninth floor of an under-con­struc­tion build­ing in Esquim­alt on Fri­day after­noon.

Lexi Devel­op­ment Group, owner of the Pacific House build­ing at the corner of Head Street and Esquim­alt Road, said in a state­ment that a small num­ber of glass pieces fell from the build­ing.

They said a glass panel broke when a con­tractor placed it on the floor of the bal­cony while doing a routine walk­through.

The rough sur­face of the bal­cony shattered the tempered safety glass, break­ing it into small pieces, they said. “While the con­tractor was clean­ing the area, a lim­ited num­ber of very small glass pieces were car­ried by the wind,” said the state­ment.

The com­pany said the con­tractor reviewed safety pro­ced­ures and will use vacu­ums, instead of brooms, for cleanup.

Rozlynne Mitchell, chair of the West Bay Res­id­ents Asso­ci­ation, said the asso­ci­ation was aler­ted to the incid­ent by a man who wit­nessed it while bik­ing with his child.

The man told Mitchell it was “a lot more than just a few pieces” of glass, she said.

“It was def­in­itely a shower of glass,” Mitchell said Monday.

It definitely wasn’t “a limited number of very small glass pieces” that hit the ground when I had a look, there were still lots of chunks of tempered glass all over the ground and a decent sized pile where they had left it overnight. I’m not sure why they would try and claim otherwise.

The railings are not well made, you can see this looking at the street level ones and I know several of the buyers have pointed out issues. The railing on our unit is not even remotely square, the glass is super crooked in the frame.
