A developer says its contractor’s cleaning processes will change after people reported seeing shattered glass falling from what appears to be the ninth floor of an under-construction building in Esquimalt on Friday afternoon.
Lexi Development Group, owner of the Pacific House building at the corner of Head Street and Esquimalt Road, said in a statement that a small number of glass pieces fell from the building.
They said a glass panel broke when a contractor placed it on the floor of the balcony while doing a routine walkthrough.
The rough surface of the balcony shattered the tempered safety glass, breaking it into small pieces, they said. “While the contractor was cleaning the area, a limited number of very small glass pieces were carried by the wind,” said the statement.
The company said the contractor reviewed safety procedures and will use vacuums, instead of brooms, for cleanup.
Rozlynne Mitchell, chair of the West Bay Residents Association, said the association was alerted to the incident by a man who witnessed it while biking with his child.
The man told Mitchell it was “a lot more than just a few pieces” of glass, she said.
“It was definitely a shower of glass,” Mitchell said Monday.
The railings are not well made, you can see this looking at the street level ones and I know several of the buyers have pointed out issues. The railing on our unit is not even remotely square, the glass is super crooked in the frame.
